Plowing
the snow from your property is a good start in protecting
yourself from slip and fall liability lawsuits. However,
its not the end of protecting yourself. Most companies
take the added step of salting their property before
a snow storm (pre-salting) and after a snow storm.
Pre-Salting:
This method of salting will help
prevent ice from forming under the blanket of snow expected.
Hidden ice can be dangerous for your visitors and should
your visitor slip and hurt themselves the liability
could be huge. For January, February and March of 2010
the average slip and fall lawsuit was in excess of $1.6
million.
Post-Salting:
Salting after the property has been plowed helps melt
any residue snow from the property. This will help eliminate
the snow from being compacted into ice by vehicles.
Again, this is important to lower the risk of liabilty. |
